Brief history
Geo-information science and geographic information systems became inseparable part for any scientific research, development project or academic study coherent to natural resources. Laboratory of Geographic Information Systems was established at the University in 1997 as a part of Institute of Environment.
Laboratory took part in development and creation of different GIS data bases, for example - GIS data base of Lithuanian forest resources at1:50000 scale; data base of Baltic States biologically valuable forests; GIS data base of Nemunas downstream area; etc. Various digital thematic cartography projects are carried out permanently. GIS Laboratory has licenses of various professional GIS and digital photogrammetric software. Laboratory framed regulation for production of special forest aerophotography and ortophoto maps, also attended in process of technology creation for ortophoto map production State company "State forest management institute".
In 2004, GIS Laboratory was reorganized to GIS Education and Research Centre of Institute of Environment of Lithuanian University of Agriculture.

1 senior researcher and 2 researchers were employed at the GIS Education and Research Centre.

5 personal, 1 laptop computers, multimedia projector, printing-duplicating equipment, GPS equipment.

License of ArcView 9.1 LabKIT (educational class of 25 working places), also Spatial Analyst, 3D Analyst, GeoStatistical and ArcGIS LabKIT, ArcInfo 7, ArcView 3.x, Geovektra, Erdas licenses, PCI Geomatics.
2006
1 senior researcher and 1 researcher were employed at the GIS Education and Research Centre.

10 personal (7 out of them are laptop computers), 1 PDA, 2 servers, multimedia projector, printing-duplicating equipment, GPS equipment.
